GPs provide quality care in autism, say Aussie researchers

But one area they could improve is screening earlier

GPs and paediatricians deliver good quality care to children with autism spectrum disorder, but there’s still a need to screen for ‘red flags’ earlier, Australian researchers say.

Their study looked at how well GPs and paediatricians adhered to a number of indicators relating to caring for children with autism.

They reviewed medical records of 228 children from 38 general practices and 19 paediatric private practices in Queensland, NSW and SA.

Researchers assessed the doctors’ adherence to 17 indicators covering assessment, diagnosis and management of autism, finding their overall adherence reached nearly 90%.
