GPs risk being ‘pushed out’ of aged care under Royal Commission reform plan

The commission is suggesting a new voluntary accreditation regime for GP practices providing aged care

Radical reforms for GP care in nursing homes will lead to an “exodus” of doctors from the already under-resourced and under-staffed sector, the AMA is warning.

Back in October, the Aged Care Royal Commission released draft recommendations suggesting the introduction of capitation funding to GP practices providing aged care — but only on condition that they undergo Federal Government accreditation.

Aged care patients would enroll with the practice, with GPs required to “meet their primary healthcare needs”.

GPs would have to perform regular medication management reviews as well as draw up an ‘aged care plan’ in collaboration with a specialist geriatrician and the aged care provider.
