GPs will be able to prescribe the new oral antivirals for COVID-19 by the end of this week — but only for their aged care patients.

The first batches of the drugs arrived in Australia last week.

Officials have promised that aged care homes with current COVID-19 outbreaks — some 1176 across Australia â€” will receive deliveries of molnupiravir (Lagevrio) within the next few days.

Some 5400 aged care patients currently have COVID-19.
