GPs to be ‘cut out’ of NDIS assessments and replaced with questionnaire
Patients will no longer need an assessment by a GP or other health professional before applying to the National Disability Insurance Scheme, under changes slated for mid-2026.
Instead, accredited assessors will use a questionnaire and a tool called the Instrument for Classification and Assessment of Support Needs (I-CAN) to assess the care needs of patients aged 16 and older.
The Federal Government said the change would save patients money by minimising GP appointments.
However, Adelaide GP Dr Maya Luks is worried it will mean patients who need support from the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) losing contact with primary care.
