Health officials have changed advice on the need for P2 respirators when collecting swabs from suspected coronavirus patients, sparking concern among GPs.

Adelaide GP Dr Rod Pearce has warned that GPs “will be nervous” about conducting coronavirus tests using surgical masks despite Federal Government advice that P2/N95 masks are not needed outside of severe cases.

Until recently, the Department of Health had been advising GPs to wear the face masks, which have particle filters, while testing patients for coronavirus, along with gloves, goggles and disposable fluid-resistant gowns.

The guidance was based on standard infection control protocols (contact and airborne precautions), meaning GP practices were required to maintain stocks of P2 masks and other protective equipment as part of their accreditation.
