The first national clinical standard for low back pain was released last week

GPs seeing patients with low back pain are advised to carry out a psychosocial assessment for each new presentation, according to the first nationally published guidelines on the topic.

Released last week, the new clinical standards have been developed amid concern drugs are commonly being prescribed in the first instance, including medications with little evidence of effectiveness.

The eight so-called “quality statements” aim to provide GPs a road map for how to manage acute or recurrent episodes, with first-line management involving patient education and advice to help patients self-manage pain through physical activity, social connection and healthy sleep habits.

During an initial consult, GPs are encouraged to consider psychosocial factors that might delay recovery, with the commission recommending CBT, progressive relaxation or mindfulness-based stress reduction for those with moderate to high levels of distress.
