GPs asked to consider offering extended HPV genotyping tests
A leading GP is urging GPs to consider extended HPV genotyping for patients undertaking cervical screening, after a survey revealed only 6% are using the test.
Dr Lara Roeske was responding to a small survey that revealed GPs had little or no awareness of extended genotyping, which identifies high-risk HPV types beyond HPV16 and 18.
The poll also found that only 5% of GPs had discussed extended genotyping with patients.
While extended genotyping was not yet integrated into the national screening program, GPs would need to start building confidence in the test ahead of the next step in cervical screening, said Dr Roeske, former chair of the RACGP.
