GPs urged to warn ADHD patients about psychosis risk amid significant rise in stimulant prescribing

Psychiatrist Professor Matthew Large says more cases are coming through as use of the medication becomes more common.

The number of ADHD patients developing psychosis and mania as a result of the medications being prescribed is rising dramatically, psychiatrists warn.

With GPs increasingly involved in diagnosis and treatment, they are being urged to warn patients about the potential risks.

Conjoint Professor Matthew Large says it has been known for a while that there is a doubling of psychosis risk in those taking stimulant medication.

A 2025 JAMA Psychiatry review showed an estimated 2.8% of people with ADHD who were prescribed stimulant medication developed symptoms of psychosis and 2.3% developed a psychotic disorder.
