‘Grave omission’: Most GLP-1 RA studies fail to assess patient diet

Should researchers have paid more attention to diet sooner?

Only two of 41 randomised controlled trials of semaglutide, tirzepatide and liraglutide have examined dietary change during treatment, an Australian review has found.

With GLP-1 RAs formally indicated as an adjunct to dietary changes and exercise for weight loss, the researchers said the widespread failure to study baseline dietary intake or changes during treatment marked “a grave omission”.

They warned it had left major questions over whether patients using the medications could change their diets in ways that worsened their nutrient intake.

“Better understanding dietary patterns may also help combat the observed weight regain following discontinuation of obesity medications,” the team wrote in Obesity Pillars last month.
