Grey no more: The amazing story of trailblazing nurse Lowitja O’Donoghue
The campaigner and Indigenous leader has been honoured by the name change of Grey electorate.
The vast federal electorate of Grey covers about 908,000km2 — an area larger than France and Germany combined.
Earlier this year, following a stormy consultation, it was renamed by the Australian Electoral Commission in honour of the nurse who spent her life fighting for social justice, Dr Lowitja O’Donoghue.
It was a controversial move. The commission had received 75 submissions in support and 235 against, including one from Liberal MP Tom Venning. He feared it might cost too much money.
The electorate’s original name was the product of empire, taken from colonial explorer Sir George Grey, who served as SA governor between 1841 and 1845.
