Half of newly registered doctors are IMGs, new government figures show

Every state and territory has seen increases in overseas-trained doctors.

More than one in two doctors newly registered in Australia last year were IMGs, with figures showing annual arrivals have risen by 50% since pre-COVID-19 days.

The Federal Government figures released on Sunday show that in the first 10 months of this financial year, some 4699 IMGs were registered in Australia.

This compares with 2018-19, when 2991 IMGs were registered.

“Internationally educated doctors who want to provide Medicare services must spend their first 10 years working in a regional, rural or remote community,” Mr Butler stated.
