Headspace ‘twice as expensive’ as GP mental health care, review finds

But Headspace argues it's still cost-effective

Headspace services cost twice as much per session compared with GP mental health care, a government-commissioned report has found.

Running to 350 pages, it concluded that Headspace needed “a new funding model” to make better use of the $100 million in Federal Government grants it received each year.

The current “one-size-fits-all approach” to funding was leading to “significant variability in cost-effectiveness between individual headspace services”, it said.

It also criticised Headspace for not clearly reporting the full costs of its operation, saying indirect costs were not always captured.
