Health insurer buys up 61 more GP clinics — we speak to Medibank

Medibank has announced it is purchasing Better Medical, a network of clinics across Queensland, SA, Tasmania and Victoria.

Australia’s largest health insurer has become one of Australia’s largest GP practice owners with the purchase of 61 more clinics.

Last week, Medibank announced it was purchasing Better Medical, a network of clinics across Queensland, SA, Tasmania and Victoria, for $159 million from private equity firm Livingbridge.

The new additions mean Medibank, through its primary care arm Amplar Health, now either fully owns or has a majority stake in just over 160 practices, with some 1750 GPs.

That puts it just below Australia’s largest medical centre operator, Sonic Healthcare, owner of IPN, which has just over 200 centres and 2000 GPs.
