A single shot of the 9-valent HPV vaccine now counts as complete protection, the Federal Government has announced.

The National Immunisation Program was updated on Monday to reflect the one-dose schedule for Gardasil 9 (CSL Seqirus) following a recommendation from the PBAC last December.

The catch-up dose program will also be extended to everyone aged under 26; however, those who are immunocompromised will still need two doses to be considered fully vaccinated.

“This will make it easier to protect young people from the range of cancers and diseases caused by HPV and help eliminate cervical cancer in Australia,” said Minister for Health and Aged Care Mark Butler.
