Health officials urge surgical masks for all patient care in Brisbane

Queensland is dealing with its first community transmission of COVID-19 in months

All GPs, patients and other health workers in Brisbane are being advised to wear surgical masks to protect themselves from COVID-19.

There are only 18 active cases recorded in the state, but officials are grappling to test and trace people linked to an outbreak at the Brisbane Youth Detention Centre.

Queensland Chief Health Officer Dr Jeanette Young announced the new mask recommendation on Monday – although she stressed it was “just a precaution”.

“I have asked hospitals, and we’re going out today to primary care, to recommend they consider using masks within their facilities for all patients, visitors and staff,” she told reporters.
