A Chinese herbal medicine, taken as capsules to encourage hair growth, has been withdrawn from sale because of a risk of liver injury, the TGA has advised.

The company, Global Therapeutics, is recalling its Fusion Hair Tonic and Oriental Botanicals Hairpro capsules following a safety investigation by the TGA.

The regulator has received 15 reports since 2014 of liver-related adverse events associated with the products, taken to promote hair growth and health.

These include six cases with markers of severe liver injury, leading to hospitalisation in three patients, with reports including raised liver enzymes, elevated bilirubin and/or visible jaundice.
