Hip fractures more common after gabapentinoid treatment: Aussie study

Older patients dispensed gabapentinoids have a nearly twofold increased risk of hip fracture, Monash University researchers have found.
Their study of more than 28,000 Victorians hospitalised for hip fracture found that those with frailty and chronic kidney disease (CKD) were also over-represented.
The team, including researchers from the Austin Hospital in Melbourne and Harvard Medical School in the US, found higher odds of hip fracture among patients who were more frail (75% increased risk) or had CKD (more than double the risk).
“In addition to the known risk associated with kidney impairment, frailty status may be an important risk factor when considering use of gabapentinoids,” they wrote in JAMA Network Open.
