‘Historic step’: Paid parental leave and $30k cash bonus for GP registrars from next year

Registrars will also have up to five days of study leave each year as part of the changes.

GP registrars who give birth or adopt will be eligible for 20 weeks of paid parental leave, worth at least $2300 a week, from 2026.

The Federal Government has published rules for a new suite of financial benefits for GP registrars, which also includes a $30,000 cash payment and five days’ paid study leave each year.

“This is a historic step forward for general practice training,” said GP Registrars Australia president Dr Chris Dickie.

GPT1 registrars on parental leave will receive $2305 a week, growing to $2763 for GPT3, starting from the first semester next year.
