Hospital executive ‘repeatedly’ certified deaths outside the law, says inquiry into falsified certificates

Some 29 patient deaths at Launceston General Hospital will be referred to the coroner after a review concluded a former hospital executive repeatedly signed death certificates without authorisation.
The conclusions came just weeks after Dr Peter Renshaw was suspended under emergency powers amid allegations by a midwife that death certificates had been deliberately falsified to prevent scrutiny by the Tasmanian coroner.
The review did not refer to Dr Renshaw by name.
It examined 86 deaths which mainly occurred between 2020 and 2022, revealing a total of 29 unexpected deaths which should have been referred to the coroner. There is no suggestion they were suspicious.
