Hospital staff asked to ‘turn the lights off’ to save money under looming budget cuts

Staff at three Melbourne hospitals have reportedly been asked to consider “turning the lights off” and limit recruitment in anticipation of looming budget cuts.
In a leaked email, Alfred Health CEO Professor Andrew Way said difficult decisions were ahead, given the model budgets provided by the State Government were “significantly less” than expected.
He said all spending including management costs and corporate activities were being considered to reduce costs.
“Even simple things like turning the lights off when we leave a room will have a financial impact, and that one is good for the planet too,” Professor Way wrote in the leaked email which The Age said it had seen.
