Hospitalisations trigger ‘nangs’ crackdown

Retailers who sell nitrous oxide will face tough new restrictions in SA in a bid to curb the misuse among young people.
The State Government announced it would limit the sale and supply of nitrous oxide canisters — known colloquially as ‘nangs’, ‘whippits’ and ‘bulbs’ — from early next year.
The canisters contain 8g of the gas and give users a seconds-long high when inhaled. They can be readily purchased in bulk online for as little as $7.50 for a pack of 10.
The move follows warnings from neurologists about the severe side effects of the inhalant, with prolonged misuse linked to spinal cord demyelination and loss of the ability to walk.
