Hot foot ends in rare Charcot neuroarthropathy

X-ray revealed destruction of the base of several metatarsals, say case report authors

A 55-year-old UK man with poorly controlled diabetes and peripheral neuropathy presented to the ED with a one-week history of painful, erythematous swelling on the top of his left foot.

Two weeks earlier, he had developed ulceration on the dorsum and lateral side of the foot as a result of trivial trauma.

Physical examination revealed a collapsed mid-foot and peripheral neuropathy, clinicians from the Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and Arrow Park Hospital reported in BMJ Case Reports.

The man had previously undergone a partial amputation of the fifth metatarsal and full amputation of the first metatarsal on the right foot.
