Doctors have stressed the importance of intradermal testing to identify uncommon causes of drug reactions, after a CT scan resulted in a patient developing fever and itchy lesions across his body.
Their 84-year-old patient had previously tolerated iodinated contrast media (ICM) and had no history of drug allergies or underlying medical conditions other than prostate cancer.
Yet a week after the scan, he returned to doctors showing signs of a severe non-immediate allergic reaction to ICM ioversol.
He was subsequently diagnosed with drug reaction with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms, or DRESS syndrome.
