Anxiety is the top health concern for women, with more than half of younger women reporting experiencing the condition, according to the results of a national survey.

One-third of those surveyed said they had experienced depression or anxiety at some stage.

But women under 36 seemed hardest hit when it came to mental health, with as many as 60% affected by anxiety, along with higher rates of stress, worry and loneliness.

Mental health was a key feature of the annual Jean Hailes for Women’s Health Survey, which explored the health needs and behaviours of almost 10,000 Australian women.
