How Dr Dunn boosted profits by 30% after her GPs went part-time (and reduced bulk-billing)

When the pandemic hit, she needed a fresh approach to tackle GP burnout

Dr Bailey Dunn’s practice in Tasmania currently has 13 doctors who all work part-time.

It’s actually a requirement of joining John Street Medical, resulting from her attempt to confront burnout among her GPs and practice staff during some of the toughest times the specialty has ever faced.

Just months after taking ownership of the clinic in Kingston, the pandemic hit, and the number of sick leave days being taken was running at an all-time high.

“When doctors work hard full time, when they are under pressure to meet everyone’s expectations, they become exhausted and resent their work,” she says. “And it’s not personal. That’s just a symptom of burnout.”
