Doctors are being urged to rethink the long-standing idea that unexpected weight loss is a key symptom of coeliac disease on the back of research showing that nutrient deficiencies are often the only sign of the condition.

The call comes from US researchers who have compared 309 adults newly diagnosed with coeliac disease with matched controls, finding some big differences in nutrient levels.
