Hundreds of ED presentations involve children injured on e-scooters, Aussie research finds

Children under 16 in Victoria are banned from using e-scooters on or near roads.

More than 250 Victorian children aged 14 or younger presented to ED with e-scooter-related injuries last year, research shows.

This compared with only 64 e-scooter-related ED presentations for 2-14-year-olds in 2022, according to UNSW Sydney-led analysis of Victorian ED data.

From 2022 to 2025, children aged 2-14 accounted for 15% of all e-scooter injuries seen in EDs, with almost half occurring on roads or highways, the researchers wrote in Injury this month.

This was despite Victoria banning children aged under 16 from using e-scooters on or near roads.
