Hundreds screened for TB after outbreak in central Australia

Thirteen cases have been identified in the state’s far north Indigenous communities.

Hundreds of people have been screened for TB with free vaccinations offered to at-risk groups in SA as health authorities scramble to contain an outbreak in the state’s far north.

Updated genome sequencing analyses confirmed that 13 TB infections were linked to the outbreak on the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (APY) Lands.

These included 11 active cases detected since May last year, as well as two historical interstate cases, of which one had died.

More than 700 people most at risk had also been screened since late 2022, including close contacts of current TB cases and school children.
