‘I always wanted to be a doctor – 12 kids later I’m about to start medical school’

Rosemary Murphy is studying medicine while caring for her brood, aged 20 months to 20 years.

As she entered her teens in the 1990s with an obsession for the British TV show called Casualty, Rosemary Murphy set her heart on making it as a doctor.

But to paraphrase John Lennon, life is what happened when she got busy making plans.

It would take another 25 years, the birth of her 12 children, a series of retail jobs and three medical school rejection letters before she won her place.

Later this month, Rosemary will finally walk through the doors of the RCSI University of Medicine and Health Sciences in Dublin to begin her six-year medical degree.
