A joke from Dr Adam Louws’ mother-in-law was ultimately the reason that Julia Creek, a town 600km west of Townsville, nabbed its first permanent GP in a decade.

The place made headlines last year after offering more than $500,000 per annum for a full-time GP to care for its 500 residents.

Dr Louws, a GP in north Brisbane at the time, had not heard of Julia Creek.

But his family had heard him repeatedly mention his dream of one day owning a dairy cow.
