‘I have concluded that governments don’t really care for general practice,’ says veteran MP

Above independent MP Andrew Wilkie’s electorate office is a GP practice.
It is accepting new patients, but he knows that most will face a “hefty gap” of over $50.
“This is in Hobart’s CBD, where you would hope that, of all places, there would be access to some GPs with open books for bulk-billing,” he says.
“If you go out to the more distant suburbs at the end of my electorate, where there are some very disadvantaged areas, you will be hard pressed to be accepted as a new patient at all.”
