‘I was a professor when I sat my GP exams’: Evidence-based medicine star Professor Paul Glasziou retires

Professor Glasziou has watched the emergence of evidence-based medicine from since before the term was even invented.

When Professor Paul Glasziou first went through medical training in the late ’70s, doctors were taught based on understanding the disease process and what seemed like a good idea coupled with doctors’ own experiences.

It did not mean treatments were bad, but factors such as the placebo effect were uncontrolled.

Professor Glasziou is about to retire as Professor of Evidence-Based Medicine at Bond University following a stellar career, having authored over 250 peer review journal articles and seven books.

For most of his career, he has been thinking about how evidence — and more importantly, its translation to clinical care — could improve treatment and outcomes in the real world.
