If GPs are rorting the hell out of Medicare why is so much of their work done for free?

The big news this week is the accusation that GPs are rorting the hell out of Medicare while at the same time begging the Federal Government to raise rebates.
There are already serious questions being asked about the actual evidence underpinning the $8 billion figure being bandied about in the media — which if true would represent the biggest public sector scandal in the nation’s history.
But maybe it’s worth flagging the stuff GPs do with no fee for the service — such as when the doctor decides to drive a severely distressed patient’s sick dog to the vet.
Yesterday many doctors took to Twitter after geriatrician Dr Kate Miller asked for examples of what GPs actually do for free as an antidote to media “hit jobs”.
