‘In prison, 50 is old age’: Dr Dulip Wettasinghe is one of Australia’s few psychiatrists trained to treat older prisoners

Dr Wettasinghe, a former internal medicine specialist, had no plans to subspecialise in forensics until the last two years of his psychiatry training.

After a decade in internal medicine, Dr Dulip Priyantha Wettasinghe made the radical move to a rare subspecialty: psychiatry with dual qualifications in old age and forensics.

“There are only a handful of us — I was one of the newest in many years,” he tells AusDoc.

“I had been working as an old-age medical registrar when I was doing physician work. And while I kept my mind open, it felt natural to work in old-age psychiatry.”

Forensics came later, in the final two years of psychiatry training.
