TGA approves expanded MS-2 Step indications for medical abortion and missed miscarriage

Professor Danielle Mazza says the changes mean fewer women will need a surgical abortion.

Doctors can now use MS-2 Step to manage missed miscarriage up to 70 days’ gestation after the TGA expanded the approved indications for the abortion medication.

The regulator has also approved the use of the medication to terminate pregnancy at 70 days’ gestation, up from 63 days, extending the window for medical abortion by a week.

The changes took effect on 21 October.

In its decision summary, the TGA said a missed miscarriage referred to when the embryo or fetus had died but the pregnancy tissue had not yet passed from the body.
