Infant infected with monkeypox: case study

Doctors are now warning that monkeypox should be considered as a differential diagnosis in certain paediatric patients

A two-month-old baby has become one of the youngest patients diagnosed with monkeypox, after presenting to a hospital with a rash and cellulitis last month.

US doctors are now warning that monkeypox, which has mainly been detected among men who have sex with men in Western countries, should be considered as a differential diagnosis in paediatric patients with pustular or vesicular rashes.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)-led team also say doctors should be aware of the possibility of household transmission to children.

The infant initially presented to an ED in Florida and was assessed for a raised erythematous rash on the arms, legs and trunk that had persisted for five days.
