Inside story: A former inmate’s view on why prisoners need Medicare

The first time Damien Linnane received a mental health care plan and therapy was after his release on bail for arson charges.
According to Mr Linnane, he had been sexually assaulted as a child and buried the trauma for two decades, until his partner then revealed she had also been sexually assaulted as young adult.
His response was to set fire to her alleged attacker’s house.
“I thought, ‘Okay, I’ve burned someone’s house down. I don’t feel any remorse for him, he’s a pretty horrible human being, but I need to talk to someone’.”
