Student with TB dies after ignoring GP advice

Manpreet Kaur may have been reluctant to seek help because she was worried about her visa status, the coroner said.

A coroner has called for greater promotion of free TB services after a young international student died a month after consulting a GP.

Manpreet Kaur, who weighed just 26kg, collapsed on 20 June last year soon after boarding a Qantas flight at Melbourne while in a wheelchair. She was planning to return home to New Delhi, India.

An autopsy revealed significant damage to the lower lobe of the left lung consistent with TB pneumonia, and a miliary pattern of infection in the right lung.

Her cousin, who she lived with, reported she had been sick for months.
