‘Invisible’: Traumatic brain injuries from domestic violence often missed, GP says

Patients rarely realise the long-term risks of repeated mild head injuries, says Dr Anousha Victoire.

Dr Anousha Victoire remembers missing the red flags when a patient presented with her husband saying she had fallen over at home.

The woman, who had consulted Dr Victoire for more than six months for gut issues, later returned alone. She said her husband had hit her.

She went on to reveal a long history of escalating violence, including strangulation while she was pregnant, Dr Victoire told AusDoc.

A few months later, the patient left the relationship and found safety. When she did, her gut issues resolved.
