Is condemnation of the Westfield killer’s psychiatrist justified? The eight-year timeline of her care
Inquest findings published last week detail Mr Cauchi's medical care from 2012 until just months before his 13 April 2024 attack at Westfield Bondi Junction in Sydney.
Dr Andrea Boros-Lavack has been referred to the Queensland Health Ombudsman over her management of Joel Cauchi, who stabbed 16 people and killed six at Westfield Bondi Junction.
She has been subject to a very public condemnation having cared for him for a period of eight years.
But although diagnosed with schizophrenia, Mr Cauchi was never deemed a threat to the public while she cared for him, thereby justifying involuntary treatment either as an inpatient or in the community.
And, as many doctors have pointed out, Mr Cauchi’s attack in Bondi happened four years after he last saw Dr Boros-Lavack.
