“The most terrifying statistic in healthcare” has become a little scarier, with another fall in the percentage of medical students whose first-choice specialty is general practice.

When the Minister for Health and Aged Care made that comment, the latest data on medical students’ intentions suggested 13.6% viewed general practice as their preferred specialty.

Now, updated data are out, based on a survey conducted by Medical Deans Australia and New Zealand in the last quarter of 2022.

Of 2000 final-year medical students who responded, just 13.1% consider general practice their dream specialty.
