Is mass bulk-billing back? 20,000 GPs given $5000 under Butler’s incentive scheme

Services Australia says more than $192 million was paid out over the last financial year to some 3524 practices.

Some 20,000 GPs offering universal bulk-billing have been paid an additional $5000 under Mark Butler’s drive to increase the number of universal bulk-billing clinics across Australia.

The figures are drawn from the Bulk Billing Practice Incentive Program, where GPs working at practices that bulk-bill everyone get a 50% cut of the payments.

Services Australia said more than $192 million was paid out over the last financial year to some 3524 practices, with each practice receiving an additional $29,300 on average.

It is important to stress that the incentive was first rolled out in November last year, and so the payments do not cover the entire financial year.
