Is seeing eight patients in one consult a good idea? Dr Michael Axtens says yes

Shared medical appointments can make a difference for 'frustrated' doctors, the GP-turned-researcher says.

“Oh my god, I had no idea that consulting could be so much fun.”

That is the feedback one GP gave Dr Michael Axtens during a trial of shared medical appointments (SMAs).

His trial was focused on patients with type 2 diabetes who were all dealing with the same “upstream determinants of disease”, such as nutrition, physical activity, stress and sleep.

Up to eight patients with the same condition underwent joint consultations for up to two hours.
