Is it time to retire ‘Mr’ from surgeons’ titles?

Adelaide surgeons Dr Michael Ee and Dr Amy Jeeves are part of a push to drop the convention, arguing it's old-fashioned and discriminatory

It’s lasted more than 400 years, but the end could be in sight for the convention of calling male surgeons ‘Mister’ with moves by an Adelaide hospital to scrap the title.

SA’s Women’s and Children’s Hospital is believed to be the first in the country to drop the term Mr or Ms for its surgeons.

The hospital announced earlier this year it was “phasing out the use of gendered titles for surgeons” to help promote gender equity and a contemporary workplace.

“Under the initiative, the use of titles such as Mr, Mrs, Miss and Ms have been replaced with the title Dr,” the Women’s and Children’s Health Network said in a statement.
