You get shot there, I die here…

Dr Schwann Rad, a Tassie GP, on the devastating impact of the conflict back in his homeland, Iran.

It was Monday morning.

The waiting room was full, marked by the familiar restlessness of patients waiting to see their regular GP in a system stretched thin by shortages of time, staff and certainty.

My next patient was a 55-year-old man who had booked in for a “full checkup”.

When I asked how I could help, he replied almost casually: “I just want to make sure nothing’s wrong. I’ve had some chest pain the last few days — it feels like I’ve been shot in the heart.”
