It’s all go: TGA approves AstraZeneca’s COVID-19 vaccine

GPs can now tell their patients with serious medical conditions if they’re on the immunisation priority list

AstraZeneca’s COVID-19 vaccine has been approved, setting the stage for the GP-led campaign to vaccinate most Australians.

The TGA says a 12-week interval between the vaccine’s two doses is optimal, based on advice from the Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (ATAGI).

“However, if this interval is not possible, for example because of imminent travel, cancer chemotherapy, or major elective surgery, a minimum interval of four weeks between doses can be used,” the regulator says.

The TGA has approved the vaccine for anybody aged 18 or older but said doctors should make a case-by-case decision on vaccinating people who are over 65.
