‘It’s commercially driven prescribing’: Butler told to investigate the telehealth cowboys
Dr Monique Ryan is calling on Mark Butler to crackdown on rogue telehealth clinics, as new claims emerge about weight loss medications being prescribed online to people with eating disorders.
The paediatric neurologist turned MP says AHPRA’s powers are insufficient — especially when faced with clinics where big money can be made from prescribing, dispensing and selling the medications.
“The prescribing of weight loss medications to patients who may be experiencing anorexia or other eating disorders is one example of the kind of harm inadequate supervision can produce,” Dr Ryan wrote in a letter to the federal health minister.
She told AusDoc she was consistently hearing from GPs concerned about the risks of telehealth prescribing for GLP-1 RAs, ADHD medications, peptides.
