Queensland GP Dr Sivateja Mukkamala met his son not as a newborn but as a bouncing almost-eight-month-old after pandemic border closures divided his family.

Dr Mukkamala, who practises in Ayr on the north Queensland coast, held baby Rudrashaivya for the first time in a Gold Coast quarantine hotel.

His wife Digvija had returned to India in January 2020 to visit family early in her pregnancy but was caught out when international borders closed.

Amid anxious efforts to get home, the baby arrived in India in mid-July.
