This is Dr Anne Tonkin on her recent appointment as the new chair of the Medical Board of Australia. There is a wry smile.

She has dedicated much of her professional life ensuring that the medical profession is “deserving of public trust”, as she puts it. She knows the nature of what she is getting into.

Last year she replaced Dr Jo Flynn, the Melbourne GP who led the regulator through turbulent times.
