‘It’s peace of mind’: Half of GP registrars now want to be employees

Dr Jean Littlewood says registrars should be able to choose between training models.

The idea that GP registrars should have one continuous employer so they can actually accrue leave and benefits, rather than a series of contracts over the course of their training, is gaining popularity.

The latest National Registrar Survey, published this year after being conducted in the first semester of 2023, showed that 47% of 1200 GP registrars wanted a single employer throughout their training.

And governments have certainly been keen.

Last month, the SA Government announced that all regional SA registrars would be able to apply for the single-employer model, with up to 80 places available.
